Teacher told to improve.

Teacher feels anxious.
Something else is criticised.
Written support plan issued.
Additional observations are planned.
Teacher starts to over think things.

Next lesson observation:

Teacher hasn’t slept well for days.
Teacher feels very anxious.
Teacher teaches unnaturally trying to tick all the boxes observer expects to see.
Lesson feels awkward.
Pupils pick up on teacher anxiety.
Teacher spends more time listening to observer grilling pupils about their learning.
Teacher watches observer write notes on their clipboard after every sentence teacher says.
Observer looks through books and makes more notes.
Once again, aspects of lesson are criticised. New things.

Next lesson observation:

This lesson has to be good.
Capability procedure has been threatened.
Teacher hasn’t slept properly for weeks.
Teacher feels very confused because they have a history of great teaching.
Teacher doesn’t know if they’re coming or going.
Teacher isn’t teaching how they want to anymore.
Teacher knows deep down that the lesson won’t go well.
Other teachers have told the teacher they are being targeted unfairly.
Teacher refuses to believe this but the teacher is on UPS and about to reach their 45th birthday. So maybe.
Lesson doesn’t go well.
Teaching assistant cries because she thought lesson was great.
Staff are panicking now because they don’t want to go through same experience.

Next lesson observation:

Doesn’t happen.
Teacher now off long term sick.
Teacher resigns.
NQT appointed.

Repeat.

  1. I’ve now left teaching. Assistant Principal, qualified SENCo. All that experience and training now lost. And the school is now scrabbling around to fill the gap. Head teacher training is the issue I think. That and the stress and hyper accountability they face. They all go to Dev sessions and come back with strategies to improve productivity and accountability. Which perhaps was needed 15 years ago. But now there is nothing left to squeeze. I got bored of the stress and hearing myself main about the stress. It was time to own my own future and many many colleagues are doing the same. I think the government is happy to see me go and be replaced with cheaper newly qualified staff. Head teachers have to square the circle and in doing so some of them become monsters. The rise of Mats and the superhead just catylises the process. Another tier of wages to pay so day to day school running is delegated to a Head of School. No relationship between the school leader and staff so it makes the systemised bullying that bit more likely. What a mess.
